Understanding Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth when it cannot be predictably maintained or when removal is recommended as part of a wider treatment plan. A dental examination helps establish the cause of the problem and whether extraction or another treatment may be appropriate.

When might a tooth need to be removed?

Extraction may be considered when a tooth is severely damaged by decay or fracture, has advanced supporting-tissue problems, or is affected by certain infections or other dental conditions. In some cases, removal may be discussed as part of orthodontic or surgical care.

The recommendation depends on the tooth, your oral health and the available alternatives. Some teeth can be treated with a filling, crown, root canal treatment or another procedure instead of extraction.

What happens during an extraction?

The dentist examines the tooth and surrounding tissues and may take dental X-rays when clinically appropriate. The planned procedure and anaesthesia are explained before treatment. The approach depends on the tooth’s position, condition and the complexity of removal.

Ask your dentist about the expected benefits, risks, alternatives and any medicines or health conditions that may affect treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless your healthcare professional advises you to do so.

Aftercare following tooth extraction

Follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by your dentist. These commonly include protecting the blood clot, avoiding smoking, and following advice about eating, drinking, cleaning the mouth and activity while the area heals. Your dentist will explain how to manage discomfort and when a review is needed.

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle as instructed, pain or swelling is worsening, or you develop other concerning symptoms. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling.

Replacing a tooth after extraction

Depending on your situation, options for replacing a missing tooth may include a dental implant, bridge or removable denture, while some teeth may not need replacement. Timing and suitability depend on healing, bone and gum health, the position of the tooth and your overall treatment plan. Discuss the options with your dentist before deciding.
